Frequently Asked Questions

  • We work with students in grades 3-12, or ages 8 - 18. This does not mean we have strict age or grade cutoffs for our programming. We prefer to consider the individual student’s ability and motivation to improve.

We will consider placing a student who wants to enroll in an enrichment class one grade level above or below their own current grade (or age range).

If this applies to your situation, please indicate as much in the area of the enrollment form designated for “other information about your child.”

We may contact you to discuss the matter further before confirming enrollment in a class, but we do not rule it out arbitrarily.

  • Cogito Learning Center is different from other tutoring in the following key ways:

    1. We use traditional teaching methods, even when we use online resources, we do not practice “discovery” or “student-led” learning. Our instructors are subject-matter experts who have chosen their materials, and written their lesson plans, based on time-tested approaches to teaching.

    2. We don’t “do homework” with our students. Even those who come to us for homework help will find our expectations much higher than typical tutoring services because we are focused on mastery.

So if a student is struggling with homework because they have gaps in their knowledge or skill in that subject, we will spend more time remediating that subject than completing the homework assignment during our sessions together.

    3. We offer two styles of “tutoring:” private, hourly sessions, which some use for “homework help,” and our Starter Series, which is a comprehensive, personalized program created for an individual child that addresses gaps in their learning across all subject-matter areas.

Parents may choose which approach they prefer, though there is a set-up fee of $250 for the Starter Series assessment and personalized program development.

  • At Cogito, we have our own set of learning “levels” we use when assessing incoming students, and evaluating their progress. These are as follows:

Novice: A beginner who is new to a subject or skill, and knows little or nothing about it; a student who requires direct instruction to become productive.

Competent: A student who has acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to perform tasks adequately, but may not yet have achieved proficiency to work independently to acquire further knowledge or skill, and still needs the guidance of an instructor to progress.

Proficient: A student who has achieved a high level of skill and can perform tasks with precision and accuracy, but may not yet have achieved the level of mastery; They can work independently to acquire more knowledge and skill, and the instructor can begin to transition to the role of mentor.

Master: A student who has achieved a high level of proficiency and is capable of mentoring other students.

We work with students at all learning levels as defined above!

  • At present, we do not have the resources to support students with special needs.

  • To help answer this question, we offer our definitions of the two words:

Tutoring typically focuses on short-term goals, such as helping a student catch up in a specific subject or addressing a particular area of struggle. Tutoring often involves one-on-one instruction, homework help, and practicing isolated tasks specific to the areas identified for support. The primary objective of tutoring is to provide targeted support to overcome a specific challenge or knowledge gap.

Enrichment: Designed for long-term goals, such as developing a love for learning, building confidence, acquiring time management skills, and learning how to take risks. Enrichment programs usually have offerings to meet a student where they are, and focus on foundational skills to address how to approach multiple concepts of a subject.

Enrichment programs typically involve small group settings, collaborative learning, and more limited private, individual attention.

Individual students may want and need BOTH tutoring and enrichment, and it may be helpful for one to precede the other.

This is why we strongly recommend signing up for our FREE introductory call so we can answer your individual questions!

  • Tutoring at Cogito is one-on-one with some exceptions. For example, if you have siblings within two years of each other in age, who would like to share a session in the same subject matter area, or you would like to put together a small group of no more than three students who fit the same criteria, we may be able to accommodate small group tutoring for them.

We may ask to meet the students in question before scheduling a first session, and there will be an additional cost of $15 per student, per hour.

If you are looking for this type of small group private tutoring, please use our contact form BEFORE registering your students.

Alternatively, consider our customized Bridge Program for small groups of students needing help over time in multiple subject matter areas.

  • It is always our goal at Cogito Learning Center to assign the minimum amount of homework necessary to achieve students’ goals.

The amount varies depending upon the age/grade range of the students, however parents and students should plan on completing up to two hours of homework per week.

  • Results will depend upon too many factors to accurately predict, but with consistent effort, students working with Cogito tutors can expect to improve their skills and confidence rapidly.

Very often, direct instruction, and personalized attention close gaps more quickly than parents expected!

  • Upon registering, you will be given access to our Parent Portal where instructors will update you with notes on attendance, course material, and student performance.
