Starter Series

Our Starter Series program is designed to help students bridge the gaps in essential academic skills, from numeracy to reading comprehension. We aim to foster curiosity, build confidence, and ensure a deep understanding of foundational concepts.

Program

Cogito Learning Center’s Starter Series program introduces the depth of content and foundations of critical thinking that are often lacking in today’s adopted public school curriculum. Whether that’s numeracy skills, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, or close reading of time-honored stories, each customized program in this series reflects a return to more traditional and objectivist learning practices.

Students in the elementary school grades can particularly benefit from this core subject-oriented approach, where they are encouraged to question while being guided through a well-structured course of subject matter and ideas, with instructors dedicated to achieving measurable gains in knowledge and skill.

Units in this series are designed to awaken students from constructivist curricula that leave them starved for explanations, giving them the skills and the confidence to excel as lifelong learners.

Process

  • We begin by learning about your child's specific needs, strengths, and areas where they may need additional support. You’ll complete a brief intake form, which will gather key information about:

    • Your child’s grade level

    • Subject areas of concern (e.g., math, reading, spelling, grammar)

    • Academic goals (e.g., building confidence, improving test scores, strengthening foundational skills)

    • Preferred learning styles (e.g., visual, hands-on, verbal)

    • Any specific challenges (e.g., attention, motivation, learning differences)

Feel free to share any additional details you think would help us understand your child’s needs better. If needed, we can arrange a phone or video consultation to discuss your child’s learning needs in more depth.

  • To better understand where your child currently stands and to tailor our program effectively, we will schedule an initial skills assessment. This may include:

    • Diagnostic testing in areas like numeracy, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension.

    • Informal observation of your child's learning style, problem-solving approach, and engagement level.

    • Review of prior academic performance, (e.g., report cards, standardized test scores, teacher feedback).

This assessment helps us customize the learning experience to your child's current level and learning needs. We aim to identify both strengths and areas for growth so we can build upon what your child already knows.

  • Based on the results of our assessment, our team will create a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) that outlines:

    • Specific goals for the subject area of your choosing, or all of them (numeracy, reading, grammar, etc.)

    • Recommended lesson structure (e.g., if one-on-one tutoring is essential, or if small group sessions, are an option)

    • Focus areas to address learning gaps and build mastery in essential skills

    • Timeline and frequency of sessions (e.g., weekly, bi-weekly, or as needed)

This plan will be shared with you to ensure it aligns with your child’s needs and expectations. We are always open to discussing adjustments and making sure the plan feels right for your child.

  • Once your child’s Learning Plan is in place, we’ll work with you to schedule tutoring sessions that fit into your family’s schedule. Sessions can be conducted in-person or virtually, depending on your preference and location.

At Cogito Learning Center, we believe in clear and consistent communication. You’ll receive:

    • Regular updates on your child’s progress

    • Ongoing feedback from instructors about areas of improvement and growth

    • Opportunities to provide input or make adjustments to the plan as needed

Our goal is to ensure transparency and accountability so you and your child feel supported and encouraged throughout the learning process.

  • As your child progresses through the program, we will continually assess their understanding and make any necessary adjustments to the Learning Plan. This helps to ensure that your child remains challenged, motivated, and engaged in their academic development.

    You can expect:

    • Periodic check-ins to review your child’s progress

    • Opportunities for you to ask questions or discuss concerns with the instructor

    • Additional resources or exercises to reinforce learning outside of sessions, if needed

We are committed to helping your child develop the confidence, skills, and habits of mind for lifelong academic success.
